Virginia Councilman Faces Long Road to Recovery After Attack
Lee Vogler, a 39-year-old member of the Danville City Council, is undergoing treatment for severe burns at the UNC Burn Clinic in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. His employer, Andrew Brooks, who owns Showcase Magazine where Vogler works as a Marketing Director, confirmed his challenging condition. Brooks mentioned that Vogler will have support from his wife, Blair, and their children as he embarks on a difficult, uncertain recovery journey.
Last week, a disturbing incident occurred when Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes, 29, allegedly attacked Vogler. Reports indicate that Hayes drove a vehicle into the building housing the magazine, poured gasoline on Vogler, and set him on fire. The severity of the burns, which cover roughly 60% of Vogler’s body, has left him in critical condition, particularly affecting his torso.
The police noted that Vogler helped identify Hayes, who was subsequently apprehended a short distance from the scene after fleeing. Hayes reportedly told investigators that he intended to end Vogler’s life in the fire.
In a statement, Blair Vogler expressed their family’s gratitude for the overwhelming support they have received in such a short time, noting that a fundraising campaign has successfully garnered over $50,000 to assist with medical costs. She emphasized how much the outpouring of love and encouragement has meant to them during this difficult period.
The authorities assert that the two men knew each other and that the attack arose from personal conflicts unrelated to Vogler’s public service responsibilities. Hayes now faces charges of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated malicious wounding, although he is not currently detained in the Danville City Jail.
