Sen. Cory Booker Reacts to Support for Zohran Mamdani
On Sunday, Sen. Cory Booker from New Jersey declined to express support for Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic mayoral candidate in New York City, during an interview with CNN host Manu Raju.
“Do you think some of the challenges the party faces stem from not fully embracing the energy from the left?” Raju inquired, referencing Mamdani, noted as a Democratic socialist. “The Democratic leaders aren’t backing him. Is that an issue? Will you support him?”
Mamdani, who calls himself a democratic socialist, previously defeated Governor Andrew Cuomo in a mayoral primary.
Booker responded, “This isn’t merely a left or right issue. It’s not about that. Some people suggest the divide in America isn’t significant enough to keep us apart when faced with those seeking authoritarianism, versus those wanting practical governance that truly impacts people’s lives.”
“Big corporations want us to focus on divisive narratives, encouraging mutual disdain,” he added. “The left-right perspective isn’t the lens we should be using right now. Can I just focus on governance for the moment?”
Raju pressed him again about his position on Mamdani’s candidacy.
“I’ve learned a lot from New York’s political scene. I focus my efforts there, not on broader debates. My energy is directed towards supporting the legislative race,” Booker said.
Other prominent Democrats, including Governor Kathy Hochul, have also been non-committal regarding support for Mamdani.
Concerns Over Mamdani’s Candidacy
Rep. Josh Gottheimer, also from New Jersey, labeled Mamdani a “job-killing socialist,” underscoring his refusal to embrace any ambiguity on the matter. “We cannot entertain socialists who threaten jobs with increased taxes,” he declared, adding, “It’s a heavy tax burden already, especially on the Jewish community.”
Moreover, Mamdani has faced criticism for not condemning a statement that suggested “globalize the intifadas.” It seems his campaign continues to stir strong reactions from various factions.
