Warren Backs Mamdani’s Focus on Affordability

Progressive Senator Elizabeth Warren expressed her support for Zoran Mamdani, a socialist mayoral candidate, highlighting his strong emphasis on affordability as crucial. Warren joined Mamdani at the DC37 Union Building to advocate for his universal childcare initiative, noting that he initiated the dialogue effectively.

She remarked, “For me, New York City stands as the epicenter of affordability—it’s fundamentally why I identify as a Democrat. This is where our discussions should begin regarding substantial and practical solutions.”

Warren considers Mamdani to be at the forefront of this critical conversation, acknowledging his dedication to his family’s well-being as he addresses these issues.

However, despite Warren’s endorsement, Mamdani has been facing difficulty in securing backing from other prominent Democrats, particularly New York’s Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Both leaders had previously supported Mamdani after a group of Queens lawmakers defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary this past June.

Recently, Warren has criticized Cuomo, who is running as an independent in the upcoming November elections, as well as current Mayor Eric Adams.

She was quoted saying, “Cuomo and Adams are struggling to manage significant campaign contributions from wealthy donors.” She emphasized that Mamdani is advancing ambitions to enhance affordability in New York by proposing taxes on the extremely wealthy and large corporations.
