DOJ begins grand jury inquiry into allegations of a conspiracy in the Russiagate case

Attorney General Initiates Investigation Linked to Alleged Trump-Russia Conspiracy

On Monday, Attorney General Pam Bondy instructed her team to proceed with a criminal referral from the Director of National Intelligence regarding a purported conspiracy connecting President Donald Trump to Russia. Reports indicate that the Justice Department is launching a significant investigation into the matter.

Bondy has directed an unnamed federal prosecutor to begin legal action, and prosecutors are expected to submit departmental evidence to the relevant courts, aiming to move towards potential prosecution, sources familiar with the situation mentioned.

A spokesperson for the Department of Justice opted not to comment on the investigation but noted that Bondy appeared to have significant concerns prompting this step. The spokesperson emphasized that these concerns are both serious and warrant further investigation.

In a related statement, DNI Gabbard claimed that “deep national actors” did not wish for Trump’s connections to Russia to come to light.

The DOJ confirmed that the referral by Gabbard occurred two weeks prior. This referral included a memorandum that expressed doubts about the impact of Russia and criminals regarding the 2016 presidential election, citing cyberattack-related infrastructure issues, and urged the DOJ to open an inquiry.

As it stands, no formal charges have been levied against any defendants, and the extensive court investigation is crucial for determining the potential prosecution of any suspects involved.

This news of the DOJ’s actions follows a recent declassification of intelligence reports in July that shed further light on the Obama administration’s choices during the 2016 election, particularly its support for Trump.

Former President Obama, along with his Intelligence Director, reiterated that Russia had intervened in the election to aid Trump’s victory, a narrative that was presented to the public as factual.

Materials made public included records of meetings that detailed how agents prepared an intelligence report assessment in December 2016, asserting that while Russia intended to interfere, the goal was not to alter elections but to sow distrust in the democratic process.

Who exactly is under investigation remains unclear, as do any potential charges, especially given the complexities surrounding activities from nearly a decade ago.

Key figures from the Obama administration’s intelligence community, including John Brennan, James Clapper, and James Comey, have faced scrutiny from Trump officials regarding their roles in the intelligence that challenged Trump’s 2016 success.

This is an ongoing story. Additional updates will follow.
