Saquon Barkley Declines Trump’s Invitation to Sports Council

Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley recently let it be known—during a training camp press conference—that he won’t be accepting President Donald Trump’s invitation to join the newly reestablished council on sports, fitness, and nutrition. This was quite a topic of discussion, especially with the council being revived under an executive order signed by Trump on July 31.

That order aimed to tackle what Trump described as a “widespread outbreak of health and fitness issues,” looking to revitalize American sports and fitness traditions. Interestingly, he made the announcement surrounded by a number of notable athletes like NFL icons Laurence Taylor and Harrison Butker.

While Trump nominated several figures for the council, including NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and players like Nick Bosa and Tua Tagovailoa, Barkley’s reaction to his name being mentioned was a blend of surprise and hesitation. “A few months ago, it was brought to my team about the council, so I’m not very used to it,” he shared, adding that he felt it was in the best interest of his family not to pursue the opportunity. He mentioned the shock of finding himself in that position.

During the signing event, various sports figures, like WWE’s Paul “Triple H” Levesque and LPGA legend Annika Sorenstam, were also in attendance. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of Health and Human Services also took part, further emphasizing the council’s potential impact on youth fitness standards.

The council’s main goal seems to be reshaping the Presidential fitness test and fostering active lifestyles among young people. Originally established in 1956 by President Eisenhower, the fitness test underwent changes, with the last iteration being retired during Obama’s presidency.

In a broader context, the emphasis on fitness and health was echoed by various speakers at the announcement, who highlighted the importance of rekindling interest in athletic challenges and nutritional health for Americans.

Barkley, meanwhile, made headlines not just for his football performance—he had a standout year leading the NFL in rushing yards, touchdowns, and receiving several prestigious awards—but also for his previous interactions with Trump. He faced criticism after being spotted golfing with the President, to which he responded on social media, suggesting people should respect the office he holds.

At the moment, Barkley is likely focused on his ambitions with the Eagles as they aim to defend their title and keep their winning momentum alive following a triumphant Super Bowl season.
