Community Mourns After Tragic Bar Shooting in Montana

Residents of a Montana town are grappling with the shock of a shooting that resulted in the deaths of four patrons at a local bar. This tragedy unfolded after the community’s cherished bartender was killed.

“It’s just unbelievable. Everyone used to enjoy going there, and now there’s just anger,” shared Anaconda local Jill Lawless. “The entire town is heartbroken,” she added, expressing the collective sentiment of disbelief.

Nancy Lauretta Kelly, 64, was among the deceased, along with David Allen Leach, 70, Tony Wayne Palm, 74, and Daniel Edwin Bailly, 59. On Friday morning, Michael Paul Brown, 45, approached the bar armed with a rifle and opened fire.

Brown managed to evade authorities initially, fleeing into the rugged terrain surrounding Anaconda, leaving residents in distress.

The community is particularly grieving Kelly, who was not only known for her role behind the bar but also for her love of animals, making her a beloved figure. “She had a big heart. All animals adored her, and she often carried treats for her dogs,” Lawless remarked. “Everyone knew Nancy. She was an incredible person.”

Just moments before the shooting, Lawless spotted Kelly enjoying time with her boyfriend, a vivid reminder of the normalcy that quickly shattered.

In addition to her bartending, Kelly was a former oncology nurse who had made a significant impact by helping many locals understand cancer treatment options. Her tragic death has sparked outrage, with some residents contemplating taking matters into their own hands to find her killer, as Lawless indicated.

“Nancy was deeply loved by everyone. I really hope they catch him soon,” she said, expressing the community’s desire for justice.

Following the shooting, Brown, who reportedly fled the bar in only his underwear, stole a pickup truck but abandoned it, once again disappearing into the wild lands of Montana.

Authorities quickly instituted a lockdown in Anaconda and nearby areas, initiating a manhunt for Brown. “There are real concerns he may return to town,” stated Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen on Sunday, emphasizing the danger he poses.

“This is a disturbed individual who indiscriminately took four lives. The public should be wary,” he added, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.

A search involving multiple law enforcement teams is ongoing, as they seek both Brown and closure for the grieving community.
