Schwarzenegger Challenges California Redistricting Efforts
A recent report indicates that former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is preparing to oppose plans to redraw the state’s legislative map. This comes amid discussions among current leaders around potential changes ahead of upcoming midterm elections.
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s spokesperson, Daniel Kechel, emphasized that Schwarzenegger views the manipulation of political boundaries as a serious issue. He described it as the “evil of gerrymandering,” expressing concern that politicians are taking power away from the public. During his time in office, Schwarzenegger transferred the authority to adjust legislative districts to an Independent Commission, aiming to reduce such political maneuvers.
Kechel noted that Schwarzenegger is particularly critical of the current situation in Texas, where similar redistricting efforts are unfolding. He believes California should not follow suit in what he perceives as a race to the bottom in electoral strategy.
According to reports, California Governor Gavin Newsom plans to redraw district maps before the midterms to counteract Republican efforts in Texas. This initiative, however, would need voter approval, complicating the process due to prior constitutional amendments established during Schwarzenegger’s tenure.
As the discussion heats up in California, Newsom asserted his confidence in securing the necessary legislative majority for the proposed changes. He indicated that if Texas Republicans do not proceed with their own redistricting, there might be no justification for California to advance its plans.
Schwarzenegger is gearing up to lead a “No” campaign against these changes, bringing together various groups that had previously collaborated in 2008 to advocate for the establishment of the California Legislative Mapping Committee and in 2010 for expanding Congressional redistricting powers. Notably, several influential organizations, including voters’ leagues and civic groups in California, are set to challenge Newsom’s proposal.
On Monday, Newsom alerted Democratic leaders about the impending redistricting efforts while cautioning that there should be no actionable steps until the Texas Republicans present their proposed map. He framed the situation as interlinked, stating it’s important to see what unfolds in Texas before moving forward.
This push for redistricting comes at a time when some Texas Democrats have taken drastic measures, including leaving the state to block voting on new Congressional maps. In response, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has taken steps to investigate these actions through the Texas Rangers.
