Ukraine Discovering Mercenaries from China, Pakistan, and Africa Fighting for Russia

Ukrainian President’s Claims About Mercenaries

On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the troops in Kharkov are battling not only Russian forces but also mercenaries from various Asian and African nations.

During his visit to Kharkiv, Zelensky accused Pakistan and others, pointing out the government’s claims about these mercenaries. He implied it lacked a basis for truth. The Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs has promised to investigate the allegations which they deny.

This idea of Russia employing foreign fighters isn’t exactly groundbreaking. In 2023, a Zambian was reported killed in the Battle of Moscow. However, Zelensky’s recent statements have widened the scope to include a range of countries where these mercenaries supposedly come from.

North Korea is the only country confirmed to have sent troops to Russia to aid in the conflict against Ukraine. They initiated this in June 2024, signing a defense treaty with Russia shortly after, although they assert their forces are stationed in Russian territories like Kursk.

According to reports from Ukraine, foreign mercenaries from nations including China, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and several African countries are present in Kharkiv.

Zelensky mentioned that soldiers on the front are reporting the involvement of these mercenaries and emphasized that discussions with military commanders focused on issues like funding for drones and troop morale.

He elaborated on the importance of defense strategies, soldier training, and supplying necessary resources to the units. Updates on a system for tracking enemy losses were also shared.

While addressing the press, only Pakistan directly responded to Zelensky’s assertions on that day. They firmly rejected any claims about their citizens participating in the conflict.

The statement emphasized their commitment to resolving the situation through diplomatic means, guided by UN principles.

Although Zelensky himself didn’t directly state these things recently, there have been continuous hints from the Ukrainian government indicating that Russia is struggling to maintain its frontlines, which may explain their reliance on foreign reinforcements.

Reports suggest that foreign fighters, including 15,000 from North Korea, are now involved, although North Korea hasn’t confirmed these numbers. However, some of their military units have been observed in the conflict area.

International accounts have pointed to the presence of Zambian and Indian nationals in the combat zones, with some claiming they were coerced into fighting after working in related sectors. Additionally, in July 2024, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concerns about this situation to Putin.

Interestingly, Cubans have also been found among the foreign fighters, with estimates indicating that around 20,000 could be involved due to a mix of mercenaries and workers responding to job advertisements.

Zelensky noted back in April that Ukrainian forces had captured Chinese soldiers fighting for Russia, highlighting this as a significant issue to address with international partners.

He expressed concerns about facing multiple foreign forces simultaneously and emphasized the need for collective action.

In response to the situation, China’s Foreign Ministry stated they were looking into the claims.
