Jets remain unconcerned despite Justin Fields' worsening passing difficulties

The Jets are downplaying concerns about their passing game at this stage.

Meanwhile, Justin Fields and the offense wrapped up their third consecutive practice on Tuesday.

On the completion front, Fields managed to connect on 16 passes, slightly over the 50% mark. However, he also threw two interceptions while demonstrating a solid 7-for-7 drill at one point.

There were also several instances of false start penalties—something that seems to be a recurring issue—and the players had difficulty getting into proper alignment on occasion.

“It’s fine,” Fields remarked afterward. “I know what I’m capable of. Sure, some guys are dropping easy passes. But, I mean, it’s practice. We ran three plays on Friday during the red zone, and we didn’t execute them all at once.”

“Our teammates have the talent to get things done when we need them to. It’s about how we bounce back during challenging moments,” he added.

Even if one poor practice might just be an anomaly during a lengthy training camp, having three in a row invites questions about the team’s current state. This is especially true since Fields is adjusting to his fourth offense in five years, and the Jets are pinning significant hopes on him at just 26.

“I’m not worried at this point,” coach Aaron Glenn said. “There’s still plenty of time to get things synced up. I believe our guys will come around and show what we expected from them.”

On the injury front, Byron Cowart was taken off the field with an ankle issue. Azureye’h Thomas also left practice due to a shoulder injury, while Tyrod Taylor (knee) and Mason Taylor (high ankle sprain) were unable to participate. On a positive note, Malachi Moore returned from his absence due to an oblique strain.

Glenn expressed confidence that Tyrod Taylor’s injury isn’t serious, though he wanted to conduct further examinations before confirming anything. Mason Taylor is set to miss this week’s practices.

Fields mentioned that his toes are “probably still a bit swollen,” but he’s not overly concerned. He hopes to see playing time in all three preseason games starting this Saturday against Green Bay.

Among those watching practice were several of Glenn’s former teammates from the Jets’ 1990s roster, including Kevin Mawae, Ray Mickens, and Jason Fabini.
