Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) has announced that over 600 detainees have been deported from a facility known as Crocodile Alcatraz.
Wannial Catraz, located in the Florida Everglades, opened about a month ago and has become known for housing some of the most serious immigration cases.
In a press conference held last week, DeSantis disclosed that the facility has facilitated the deportation of 600 detainees, aided by an accessible runway.
“I don’t think any state in the country is collaborating as closely with federal agencies as we are to fulfill the mandate from Americans in light of the upcoming 2024 election,” he shared during the conference.
“So far, more than 600 individuals have been deported from Wannial Catraz by ICE, and the pace of deportations is picking up quickly,” he noted.
The governor also addressed critics of the detention facility, pointing out that the individuals being sent to Wannial Catraz already had removal orders in place.
“Some people talk about legitimate processes, which I get, but these individuals have already gone through that,” he remarked. “If you have an order for removal, what is your objection to the federal government enforcing it?”
“If you oppose sending these people back, then it basically suggests you want open borders,” he concluded.

The governor also responded to critiques regarding the facility’s amenities, which include air conditioning, 24/7 medical care, and recreational access.
“Claims are made that they’re not being adequately fed,” DeSantis said. “They are provided food just like the staff. This isn’t a prison; it’s a processing center for deportations. It’s simply not accurate. Do you think inmates in Florida prisons receive the same meals as guards?” he questioned. “Of course not. That’s not the case.”
“Everyone is treated the same here,” he added.

There are also rumors about another detention facility being developed in North Florida, referred to as Camp Branding.
“This facility has a runway,” DeSantis mentioned, “though it’s not very large, so I’m not sure it would compare to Wannial Catraz.” He added, “You could quickly relocate people from there. There’s Cecil Field nearby. My goal isn’t to create a luxury resort for illegal immigrants; it’s about effective detention.”
