Dive boat captain Joe Mazraani passes away during underwater diving trip

A diving boat captain, Joe Mazraani, passed away last week during a dive off the coast of Massachusetts, his diving company reported on Friday.

At 48, Mazraani was exploring a wreck known as Big Engine Steamers approximately 200 miles from Georges Bank when he died on July 29. The company indicated in a statement that there were no indications of diver mistakes or equipment malfunctions, suggesting that a medical emergency might have occurred. They are currently conducting a thorough investigation into his death.

“Joe Mazraani was larger than life,” his wife and business partner, Jennifer Seritti, shared. “He was kind, caring, and generous. He played various roles—mentor, friend, brother, son, and partner. Whether diving in perilous waters or defending his clients, Joe inspired everyone to strive for their best.”

Seritti, a prominent public defense attorney in New Jersey, co-owned Atlantic Defense Relief with Mazraani. She expressed, “I loved Joe deeply, and he loved me the same. Our partnership was strong, especially in this.”

Born in Lebanon and moving to the U.S. at 15, Mazraani became a certified diver in the mid-1990s. He developed an obsession with exploring wrecks off the northeastern coast, his biography notes. He also led a dive to the Andrea Doria, a famous shipwreck.

As an attorney, Mazraani played a significant role in securing the release of Timothy Puscus, who was wrongfully convicted of murder in 2024 and had been sentenced to a lengthy prison term.

His contributions and character were remembered fondly in a statement from the New Jersey Public Defense Office, which remarked, “Joe was fearless, kind, and deeply committed to justice.”
