On Wednesday, Russian and Chinese military forces conducted exercises aimed at destroying “enemy” submarines. This took place shortly after President Trump announced the deployment of two nuclear submarines in areas close to Russia.
The naval drill featured Russian IL-38 planes from the Pacific Fleet alongside China’s Y-8 anti-submarine aircraft. Following Trump’s announcement last Friday regarding the positioning of the submarines, a rather provocative message was issued by former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev.
The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that thanks to effective joint operations, “enemy” submarines were quickly identified and locked onto during exercises in the Sea of Japan. The crews from both nations expressed gratitude for their successful collaboration.
The White House and the State Department didn’t respond to inquiries about the situation as of Wednesday.
Meanwhile, White House envoy Steve Witkov is preparing for a trip to Russia, just days ahead of the August 8 deadline regarding sanctions and a ceasefire over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Trump, speaking to reporters, affirmed that the nuclear submarines are “in the region” to counter Russia’s actions.
Medvedev, on his end, commented that Trump’s newly set deadline for Russia regarding Ukraine could push tensions closer to war.
In response to Medvedev’s statements, Trump expressed concern, stating that if inflammatory comments continue, substantial military responses—like the positioning of nuclear submarines—would be necessary.
He also remarked that words carry significant weight and can lead to unforeseen consequences, hoping that this situation does not escalate further.
