Trump Increases Tariffs on India Amid Oil Import Dispute

President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he will raise tariffs on Indian imports after India’s continued purchase of Russian oil. The tariffs are set to increase from 25% to 50% if these imports do not cease.

This decision is part of a broader strategy to limit economic ties with Russia while ongoing negotiations with President Vladimir Putin over the conflict in Ukraine remain stagnant. Reports indicate that India has been a significant consumer of Russian oil, managing to import about 1.75 million barrels daily from January to June this year.

Trump’s comments come as the U.S. has warned of imposing additional tariffs on buyers of key Russian goods if no progress is made by Friday. Interestingly, India has stated its intention to maintain its oil imports despite these threats.

In his declaration, Trump pointedly noted, “We have seen that the Indian government is currently importing oil directly or indirectly from the Russian Federation.” He added that, as a result, Indian goods entering the U.S. would incur a new surcharge.

Back on July 30, Trump initially imposed a 25% tariff, suggesting that India couldn’t continue engaging in trade with Russia while the Ukraine situation remains unresolved. He remarked, “India is our friend, but we have been doing relatively little business with them over the years as their tariffs are the highest in the world.”

Despite these developments, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India has yet to respond to requests for comments regarding the tariff increase.
