Pete Hegseth Calls for Confederate Monument to be Restored to Arlington National Cemetery

Defense Secretary’s Push to Reinstate Confederate Monuments

Defense Secretary Pete Hegses is taking steps aimed at reversing what he sees as an overreach in efforts to diminish historical monuments, specifically Confederate ones.

On Tuesday, Hegses shared a post on X, revealing plans to bring back the Confederate monument, often referred to as the “reconciliation monument.”

“We’re excited to announce that Moses Ezekiel’s intricate sculpture, known as the ‘reconciliation monument,’ will be rightfully returned to Arlington National Cemetery, close to where he is buried,” Hegses stated.

“We shouldn’t let ourselves be run over by, you know, overly sensitive approaches,” he added. “Unlike some, we recognize the importance of preserving American history.”

The memorial was initially taken down in 2023 under the leadership of former Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin during President Biden’s term.

This recent announcement comes several months after former President Donald Trump issued an executive order titled “Restoring Truth and Sanity in American History.” The order expressed concern about a concerted effort to alter the factual history of the nation, replacing truth with ideologically skewed narratives.

The order points out that there seems to be a tendency to view foundational US principles and significant historical moments negatively. Instead of uniting the country through a shared understanding of its past, this approach reportedly heightens social divisions and undermines the ideals that have historically inspired progress.

Many Americans have perceived this shift, particularly during the Biden administration. In mid-2020, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the removal of portraits of a former Confederate speaker, all of whom were Democrats.

The executive order emphasized a commitment to restore federal sites that commemorate history—like parks and museums—to showcase a legacy that highlights ongoing progress toward a more perfect union and a notable track record in promoting freedom.

This initiative comes just as discussions continue about the reinstatement of the statue of Albert Pike, another Confederate figure who became a target during the societal upheavals of 2020.
