Approval granted for the longest suspension bridge in the world to link Sicily with Italy

Approval for World’s Longest Suspension Bridge

The approval for a bridge, set to be the longest suspension bridge in the world, was announced on Wednesday.

The Messina Bridge, a significant undertaking connecting Sicily to mainland Italy, spans two miles and is estimated to cost about $15.5 billion, according to the Associated Press. The idea has been floating around since 1969, undergoing various approvals and cancellations until it was revived in 2023 by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s administration.

Historically, the concept of linking Sicily and mainland Italy isn’t new. It traces back to ancient Roman times, when Romans attempted to transport 100 elephants captured after the Battle of Panomas in 250 BC. Some folks even link this idea to Homer’s “Odyssey,” referencing the notorious sea monsters Scylla and Charybdis.

The Messina Strait is projected to handle 6,000 cars per hour, featuring four lanes of traffic next to a dual-track railway, as reported by the Associated Press.

However, the bridge faces several criticisms. Opponents raise alarms about environmental impacts, safety risks, and potential mafia influences. Anna Sergi, a sociologist at the Royal United Services Defense Security Institute (RUSI), highlighted concerns that similar public projects often attract organized crime. She expressed that “the appeal of corruption and the massive mafia work” overshadows real societal benefits.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella reassured that the project will adhere to anti-mafia regulations typically applied to large infrastructure endeavors.

Further concerns stem from the seismic activity in the region, particularly from the Messina fault, which was responsible for a deadly earthquake in 1908. Despite this, the Italian infrastructure group Webuild argues that suspension bridges are generally resilient against seismic forces, citing successful examples from Japan, Türkiye, and California.

The Canakkale Bridge in northwest Türkiye currently holds the title of the longest suspension bridge, reaching over a mile and constructed by Webuild.

According to the Associated Press, construction on the Messina Bridge is anticipated to commence by the end of summer.
