Trump Claims U.S.-Made Semiconductors Will Be Safe While Foreign Ones Face Full Tariff

Trump on Manufacturing and Tariffs

During a press conference in the Oval Office, President Donald Trump remarked that while imported chips and semiconductors face nearly 100% tariffs, those produced in the U.S. remain tariff-free.

Since kicking off his 2024 campaign, Trump has committed to revitalizing American manufacturing, boosting job creation, and attracting foreign businesses to invest in U.S. operations. He pointed to Apple’s recent $100 billion investment in domestic manufacturing as a sign that companies are returning to their roots.

“It’s a company like Apple, they’re home,” Trump stated. “They all want us to come home, and they have to get home. We’re going to treat them well. We’re implementing a substantial tariff on chips and semiconductors. The good news for companies like Apple is that they won’t incur charges if they commit to building in the U.S.”

In essence, we won’t impose tariffs on those investing here. This has prompted numerous companies to leave other countries and set up operations in the U.S. Thus, we are applying a roughly 100% tariff on foreign-made chips and semiconductors.

Since Trump’s return to the White House, Apple has shifted more operations back to the U.S. due to trade risk concerns. In April, he unveiled a “liberation day” initiative, which imposed broad mutual tariffs on a select few nations.

Shortly after its introduction, Trump announced a 90-day pause on tariffs to facilitate negotiations. The tech giant, along with others, has plans to launch chip production at a Taiwanese manufacturer’s facility in Arizona, marking it as the first of its kind in the U.S.

“I didn’t even mention this to you,” Trump told Apple CEO Tim Cook. “We discussed this concept, but I didn’t disclose it. It’s a significant factor. So, we’re implementing 100% tariffs on all chips and semiconductors entering the U.S.”

“However, if you agree to build here, or if you’re already in the process, as many are, you won’t face customs duties. If, for any reason, you decide not to build after making a commitment, we’ll revisit that and apply tariffs retroactively. You’ll be charged, and that’s a guarantee,” Trump added.

Apple’s new $100 billion investment follows a previously made $500 billion pledge earlier this year and includes plans to employ 20,000 American workers over the next four years. Additionally, the company is aiming to establish a new artificial intelligence server factory in Texas.
