OpenAI Unveils GPT-5, A Major Upgrade

On Thursday, OpenAI introduced GPT-5, describing it as a significant enhancement over its earlier version, marking a step forward in the development of large-scale language models.

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, referred to this newest model as “like having a team of PhD-level experts in your pocket.” He views GPT-5 as a crucial move towards achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI).

Google defines AGI as the speculative intelligence of a machine capable of understanding or learning tasks that typically require human intelligence, essentially trying to replicate the cognitive functions of the human brain.

Nick Turley, who heads the ChatGPT team, described GPT-5 as the smartest and quickest model to date, featuring a conversational style that’s more natural and human-like. Michelle Pokrass has remarked that, following training with ChatGPT, GPT-5 stands out as the ideal coding model for developers.

The AI Race

In statements, former President Trump claimed that America is currently “winning” in the AI competition with China and emphasized that executives from Meta endorse this strategy.

One of the innovative features in GPT-5 is called VibeCoding, allowing users to create applications by simply requesting it to code. Additionally, it can produce diverse and extensive outputs, often varying responses to the same question.

Turley confirmed that GPT-5 will be available at no extra cost to current ChatGPT users, although there will still be some limitations for those on unpaid or lower-cost subscriptions.

To ensure better safety measures, Alex Beutel, the Safety Research Lead, highlighted that GPT-5 was built with an improved safety framework. The company has also undergone rigorous safety testing to make the system more resilient against misuse.

Reports indicate that the federal government is currently using ChatGPT across various agencies, with initiatives in place to ensure the United States leads in AI development and regulation, a statement reiterated by Trump.

During a recent Washington Technology Summit, Trump declared, “The United States is the country that started AI racing… And as President of the United States, I am here today to declare that America will win it.”
