Texas Attorney General Seeks Arrest Warrant for Fleeing Democrats
Attorney General Ken Paxton of Texas is pursuing an arrest warrant in Illinois for Democratic lawmakers who left the state, avoiding the GOP’s attempts to redraw the Texas Legislature’s map.
Recently, the Texas House approved a warrant that state troopers can enforce; however, it’s worth noting these warrants apply only within Texas borders.
Paxton filed his request with the 8th Judicial Circuit in Illinois, arguing for the enforcement of the law there, aiming to get local law enforcement involved to return the lawmakers who he claims abandoned their responsibilities to participate in Texas’s special legislative sessions.
This move comes as Democrats exited to hinder the GOP’s ability to achieve a legislative quorum and thus prevent the redistricting process. Notably, Trump’s strategy involves picking up five seats in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.
Paxton’s actions follow a statement from Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who claimed that the FBI was “tracking” the Democratic lawmakers who left the state.
Abbott mentioned, “The Texas DPS and the FBI are looking for these Democrats. They’ll head straight to the Texas Capitol,” referencing his thoughts shared on a social media platform.
He added that some individuals might have exploited their positions by manipulating ballot-related actions and evading potential bribery charges. “In Texas, your actions have consequences,” he asserted.
Additionally, Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) noted that the FBI had agreed to his request to assist law enforcement in locating these lawmakers.
In response, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker stated on Sunday that his state intends to protect the Texas Democrats seeking refuge. “They’re here in Illinois, and we’re committed to ensuring their safety,” he told reporters at a press conference with the lawmakers from Texas.
He further criticized Paxton, asserting that it’s the Texas leaders, not the Democrats, who fail to adhere to the law. “They must be held accountable,” Pritzker emphasized.
