Trump Remarks on Jeff Duncan’s Party Switch
President Donald Trump recently shared his opinion on Jeff Duncan, Georgia’s former lieutenant governor, who switched his political affiliation to the Democratic Party after being expelled from the state’s GOP for perceived disloyalty.
Duncan, who has publicly criticized Trump in the past, announced his party change, explaining that he served as Georgia’s lieutenant governor from 2019 to 2023 as a Republican.
In a post early Friday morning, Trump had some pointed words for Duncan. He labeled him as a “total loser” and declared, “Good Riddance Jeff. You don’t even have a chance!”
This isn’t the first time Trump has expressed his disapproval of Republicans who have fallen out of favor. On August 3, 2024, he called Duncan “lightweight” and criticized him for aligning with CNN, suggesting his only role was to attack Trump. Trump’s post also indicated that the Georgia GOP should expel him since, according to Trump, he lacked support aside from the state’s governor, Brian Kemp.
Duncan reflected in an op-ed that his decision to shift to the Democratic Party had been forming long before Trump’s reaction to the 2020 election loss and the events of January 6, 2021. He indicated that policy disagreements also played a part in his decision to leave. “There’s no specific moment when my political views shifted, but I definitely have,” he noted, emphasizing his struggle to love his neighbors while identifying as a Republican.
His removal from the Georgia GOP occurred in January after he endorsed Joe Biden during the 2024 re-election campaign and supported Kamala Harris when Biden withdrew.
Following his expulsion, Duncan was advised by Georgia GOP Chairman Josh McConne to refrain from using his Republican credentials in public and media engagements. Despite this, he has indicated intentions to “attack the Republicans” in his new role as a CNN contributor.
