A Father’s Despair Over His Captured Son
Imagine facing your worst nightmare. Picture seeing your child lying lifeless before you. It’s unbearable. I feel him there—weak, frail. My heart screams, while I stand helpless, unable to do anything. It’s a soul-crushing situation.
What would you do in such a moment? How could you possibly find peace?
Honestly, it’s unfathomable. The emotional weight is immense. The profound helplessness engulfs you; fear unfolds right before your eyes, yet, there’s nothing you can do.
My son, Rom Braslavski, is currently a hostage. At 22 years old, he has been held by Islamic jihad in Gaza for 670 days as I write this. ROM is in hell. I am living the nightmare.
The plight of the released US and Israeli hostages reveals the hunger and abuse inflicted by Hamas, prompting families to urge Trump for action.
On October 7, 2023, marked as the darkest day in Israeli history, Rom, working as a security guard at the Nova Music Festival, faced the horror of a terrorist attack. In that chaos, perhaps he could have fled, but no—he chose to stay behind, to help the injured, to maintain dignity despite the chaos.
Recently, Islamic Jihad released a harrowing propaganda video. My heart shattered; what I saw was devastating. My son appeared dangerously close to death—visibly suffering, pleading for his life. It was almost as if he had transformed before my eyes. His voice was weakened, his expression hollow. I didn’t even recognize him; it was a moment of unbearable grief.
A few months back, they had released another video of Rom. He looked frail then, too, but there was a flicker of hope in his eyes—a belief perhaps that he might be freed. Now? It’s as if that spark has vanished. He seems to be waiting for death, and it’s not just about comparing the two moments. It’s a father witnessing his child slowly wither away.
ROM was always the strong one, someone who made others feel safe. Now, he’s hardly recognizable and a victim of severe psychological and physical torment. This is not the boy I raised; he is a broken spirit.
The terrorists who are holding him claim they provide hostages with the same food as their fighters. But you can’t help but see the truth in the videos: my son is starved intentionally while his captors are well-fed. This starvation is deliberate and obvious.
President Trump, I reach out to you imploringly—not as a political figure but as a father. You know the importance of protecting those you love. You’ve shown strength and clarity, and I urge you to use that to demand the immediate release of all hostages held in Gaza.
This situation extends beyond Israel; it’s a global moral test. What happened on October 7 was not just an attack; it was an assault on civilization itself.
Time is critical for my son. Each passing moment could be his last. He needs food, medical attention, and most urgently, to escape this nightmare.
We must act decisively. All hostages need to be freed at once—no lengthy negotiations, no conditions. Silence is not an option.
Let not the light in Rom’s eyes fade away forever.
