Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist candidate for New York City mayor, directed his focus towards President Donald Trump during a press briefing on Thursday.
His remarks followed reports indicating that Trump might consider entering the mayoral race. Mamdani mentioned that if he were to win, his strategy would be to oppose the Trump administration.
The reports also noted that former New York governor Andrew Cuomo is an independent candidate for mayor. It was recently revealed that Trump had a phone conversation with Cuomo, as reported by the New York Times.
However, White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt stated that Trump does not aim to participate in this election.
During a past press event, Mamdani expressed, “My administration will be Donald Trump’s worst nightmare. You don’t have to take my word for it; just look at my victory in the Democratic primary to see how I’ll tackle the Trump administration.”
Mamdani elaborated, “How else can you interpret a president who considered naturalizing a Democratic candidate in New York City? This is someone who even entertained ideas about deporting or arresting me—exceeding the will of the city’s residents.”
“These actions showcase a president who fears I might genuinely threaten his agenda,” he asserted.
This isn’t the first time Mamdani has made such declarations. Back in June, he remarked that Trump “targets the next mayor of this city” and stressed the need for a mayor who would “actually fight back.”
“That’s exactly what I’m about,” he said. “I’m Donald Trump’s worst nightmare. Being a progressive Muslim immigrant who stands for my beliefs sets me apart from Andrew Cuomo, whose campaign is financed by a billionaire who helped put Trump in office.”
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have recently confirmed support for Mamdani, highlighting his radical roots as key to seizing state power.
In June, Trump criticized Mamdani following his primary victory, calling him a “100% communist madman,” and labeling his win a concerning shift for the Democratic Party.
Trump remarked, “We’ve seen radical leftists before, but this is just absurd. He appears awful, his voice doesn’t resonate well, and he has support from figures like AOC and Chuck Schumer. It’s a significant moment in our nation’s history!”
