Governor Eleni Kunarakis Exits California Governor Race

Governor Eleni Kunarakis of California has announced her decision to withdraw from the gubernatorial race. The news came through a statement released on Friday.

Kounalakis, a Democrat, emphasized that this was not an easy choice. Throughout her campaign, she engaged with Californians, listening to their concerns, hopes, and visions for a more equitable future.

In her statement, she noted her commitment to “improving affordable housing” and making a meaningful impact.

“As a state accountant, I will fight to ensure that California housing investments align with sustainable and affordable housing developments that address the needs of our families and communities,” Kounalakis stated.

This announcement follows comments from former Vice President Kamala Harris, who recently indicated she considered running for governor but ultimately decided against it for this election.

The race for California’s governorship in 2026 is wide open, as incumbent Governor Gavin Newsom is unable to run for reelection due to term limits. Newsom began his tenure in 2019 and secured his second term in 2022.
