Trump's support for John James leads GOP opponent Aric Nesbitt to withdraw from Michigan governor race

Trump Endorses John James for Governor of Michigan

President Donald Trump, in a recent post on Truth Social, expressed his support for Congressman John James in his bid to become the next governor of Michigan.

“I am honored to support America First Congressman John James as he runs to be the next governor of the beautiful state of Michigan!” Trump stated in his post. He highlighted James’ background as a West Point graduate, combat pilot, and Iraq War veteran. Trump described James as a successful businessman and a respected member of Congress, asserting that he possesses the necessary courage and wisdom to deliver strong results for the state and its people.

The post continued, “As Governor-elect, John will work tirelessly to grow our economy, cut taxes and regulations, promote MADE IN THE USA, unlock America’s energy advantage, secure our borders, strengthen our military and veterans, protect our elections, defend our ever-under-siege Second Amendment, and advocate for Michigan’s working men and women.” Trump concluded with, “I fully support John James to be the next governor of Michigan. He will not let you down!”

James, responding to the endorsement, conveyed his gratitude, calling Trump “the greatest president of all time.” He stated, “Your support is fueling a movement across Michigan, and we’re ready to win.” He expressed optimism about sending Mike Rogers to the U.S. Senate and retaining Republican seats in the House.

Following Trump’s endorsement, Michigan Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt withdrew from the gubernatorial primary and announced his support for James. In a statement, Nesbitt reflected on the challenges of the race but emphasized a deep love for Michigan and a commitment to its future.

“This campaign has always been about the people of Michigan and supporting President Trump to defeat the Democratic Party in November,” Nesbitt noted. He encouraged supporters to join him in backing James, suggesting that a divisive primary would only benefit Democrats.

James echoed Nesbitt’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of unity among conservatives. “When President Trump endorsed this campaign, Aric Nesbitt did exactly what a true Michigan conservative should do,” James stated.

Originally from Southfield, Michigan, James has a notable background, having served eight years in the U.S. Army as a Ranger-qualified flight officer. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, he led an Apache helicopter platoon and received several commendations for his service.

After his time in the military, James took on a leadership role in his family business, significantly growing revenue and creating jobs in Michigan. He launched his campaign for governor last April, criticizing the state’s leadership as weak and incompetent.
