Homeland Security Secretary Visits Illinois to Criticize Local Leaders
On Friday, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem made a trip to Illinois, aiming her criticism at Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson. She accused them of being, well, “closedist” regarding the removal of illegal immigrants involved in crime.
During her remarks in the Chicago suburbs, Noem pointed to a recent ICE halt involving illegal Mexican immigrants convicted of predatory sexual assault against victims under 13. “These individuals would still be on our streets today, committing crimes, attacking people, hurting them, and hurting children if Mayor Johnson had his way,” she asserted.
Noem expressed concern that sanctuary policies impact not just law enforcement but also local businesses and the communities they serve. It’s, I think, a complex situation that raises real questions about safety and accountability for officials.
She further heightened her accusations, saying, “I’m here today because these elected Illinois leaders ignore the law. In fact, they’re occluders when it comes to getting dangerous criminals off the streets.” Her comments targeted leaders who she believes are protecting criminals rather than citizens. That’s a pretty serious allegation, not something to just toss around lightly.
Representatives for both Pritzker and Johnson didn’t respond to requests for comments on Friday. Still, Noem pressed on, noting that the past seven months had seen ICE issue more than 1,664 detentions in Chicago—a figure she claimed marked a 106% increase compared to the previous administration’s record. However, she lamented that local authorities only honored 8% of those detentions. That’s not exactly an impressive statistic, right?
In a broader context, it seems like a heated debate is brewing around immigration policies and local governance. While some view sanctuary policies as necessary protections, others see them as undermining public safety. There’s a lot more to this discussion, and it will be interesting to see how it unfolds.
