Resolution Proposed Over Controversial Comments
Representative Carlos Guimenez, who fled Cuba’s communist regime in his youth, introduced a resolution on Friday. This comes in response to comments made by Representative Delia Ramirez, a member of the Homeland Security Committee, who purportedly violated her oath.
The resolution refers to statements Ramirez made in Spanish during an event in Mexico City earlier this week. Guimenez remarked, “I was born in Cuba and was expelled from my hometown shortly after the communist takeover.” He expressed his gratitude for what he called an exceptional country that has offered refuge to many Cuban immigrants, including firefighters and local leaders.
He highlighted the significance of seeing a country liberated after 64 years, adding, “Only in America,” emphasizing his unique position as the only Cuban-born member of Congress.
Guimenez argued that when lawmakers prioritize allegiance to foreign nations over the U.S., it undermines their eligibility for certain federal roles. He stated, “Not only is it unacceptable, it also disqualifies our services on the committees that are tasked with securing our hometown.”
In addition to his work on the Homeland Security Committee, Guimenez chairs the Maritime and Transportation Subcommittee. Online reactions to Ramirez’s comments have been mixed, with figures like actor James Woods making light of the situation, and conservative commentator Matt Walsh calling for her arrest.
Responding to the backlash, Ramirez’s office noted that some comments about her heritage have been taken out of context, asserting that they demonstrate pride in her multicultural background. She stressed that as a citizen by birth, the recent criticisms were attempts to silence her opposition to what she sees as government overreach by certain individuals.
Ramirez further defended her identity by sharing that she is both an immigrant’s daughter and a proud American, linking her roots to both Guatemala and Chicago, Illinois.
