Nancy Mace criticizes Alan Wilson's record on prosecutions in the governor's race

Republicans in South Carolina Intensify Rivalry for Governor Nomination

In South Carolina, two notable Republicans are escalating their attacks in the race for the GOP nomination for governor. Attorney General Alan Wilson and Representative Nancy Mace are both pushing hard for their positions.

Mace has criticized Wilson for allegedly offering lenient plea deals to violent offenders, pointing out that this includes those convicted of severe crimes like child abuse, rape, and murder. “I have a lot of casualties. They’re moving forward with my assistance,” Mace remarked in an interview. “They don’t get that from the Attorney General.”

Following her announcement to run for governor earlier this week, Mace accused Wilson of failing to deliver justice to victims of crime. She highlighted cases where offenders reportedly received reduced sentences under Wilson’s plea deals. One case involved a man facing a lengthy prison term, but Wilson allegedly cut this down significantly.

Wilson, who has held the attorney general position since 2010, now finds himself defending his record amid Mace’s accusations. He claimed, “My office has dramatically increased efforts against internet crimes involving children,” while also mentioning expansions in their human trafficking task force. Responding to Mace, he suggested her accusations were politically motivated, saying, “She’s just throwing everything she can in our direction.”

This isn’t the first time the two have clashed. Earlier this year, Mace called Wilson out during a speech, accusing him of neglecting sexual assault evidence connected to her and others, including her ex-fiance. Mace expressed that she had provided his office substantial evidence but felt it was ignored.

In a recent statement, Wilson countered, asserting that Mace’s claims were false and rather personal in nature. “Mace is a liar who does anything to distract from her liberal voting record. I’ve devoted my career to protecting children,” he stated.

As their rivalry heats up, both candidates appear eager to solidify their positions ahead of the gubernatorial race. The outcome of this contest may set the stage for the future direction of South Carolina’s leadership.
