On Friday, the WNBA released a statement addressing a troubling trend where fans have been throwing adult toys onto the court during games. This reflects a serious concern for the league, which is collaborating with federal law enforcement to pursue legal action against those responsible.
“The safety of all individuals in our arenas is a top priority. We are actively working with local and federal law enforcement to ensure that appropriate measures are taken, including potential felony charges against individuals participating in or encouraging this reckless behavior,” the statement emphasized.
The latest occurrence of toys being thrown happened during a game between the Chicago Sky and the Atlanta Dream on Thursday night, marking a fourth such incident. Prior to this, there were reports of at least two arrests in connection with similar disruptions.
Last week, this peculiar phenomenon unfolded at six WNBA games. It initially started on July 29 during a match in Atlanta, followed by another incident in Chicago on August 1. There was also an incident involving a player from the Indiana Fever where adult toys were thrown at her.
Also, recent reports indicated that toys were thrown during a game between New York and Phoenix, although these did not escalate to the court. An 18-year-old man was arrested in Phoenix, claiming he was merely trying to pull a prank that had been trending on social media. He now faces charges for assault, disorderly conduct, and the public display of explicit material. Investigations are ongoing regarding the New York incident.
A man from Georgia was also arrested following the Atlanta event, charged with multiple offenses, including disorderly conduct and public indecency.
