Former Diplomat Arrested for Alleged Child Sexual Abuse

A recent report revealed that a former diplomat, a consultant from the World Bank, and three fathers were arrested last month in connection with the sexual abuse of three children under the age of 10 in Washington, D.C.

Thomas Mahony, an Australian national aged 42, is accused of abusing two seven-year-old girls and one eight-year-old boy, according to reporting from a local outlet.

The alleged incidents reportedly took place during separate occasions in November 2023, February 2023, and July 2025.

Authorities had been informed about abuse as early as early 2023, but the U.S. Attorney’s Office initially chose not to indict Mahony, citing concerns over proving the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Following his arrest and subsequent charges on July 23, the World Bank confirmed that Mahony’s employment was terminated.

Community members described Mahony as an active and engaged parent, even volunteering as a photographer for a children’s swimming team in the local area. One mother, who had previously viewed him as a “community hero,” was shocked to learn that the alleged abuse had occurred while her children were occupied with movies and games.

In one instance from November 2023, Mahony allegedly took one of the girls to the bathroom during a play date, prompting her mother to alert the authorities.

Another mother expressed her trust in Mahony until she discovered that he had allegedly abused her daughter last month. Her anguish was palpable; she shared, “The only thing you can do is cry,” and she felt she had let her kids down by trusting him.

She recalled a particular incident in July, where Mahony invited her daughter to play a game in a bedroom after spending time at a swimming competition. When the mother quietly approached the bedroom, she saw her daughter seated close to Mahony, both fully dressed, but she couldn’t determine their positioning.

In a state of disbelief, she retreated to play with other children. When her husband arrived, she directed him to check on their daughter. Upon investigation, he reported that Mahony had emerged from the bedroom.

Later that evening, the parents spoke to the seven-year-old about personal boundaries. “But Thomas did,” she reportedly replied, revealing that inappropriate actions had occurred on several occasions when Mahony’s wife was asleep.

Additionally, an eight-year-old boy who was playing video games with Mahony’s son also claimed he had been improperly touched during a separate encounter in July 2024.

After these instances came to light, another mother reported abuse involving her daughter back in 2023 but had initially sided with Mahony, viewing him as a trustworthy neighbor. A fourth child also came forward with allegations against Mahony this week, although these claims have not led to formal charges.

In the aftermath of these revelations, Mahony’s wife expressed her intention to relocate to Japan and then return to Australia. Mahony has been denied bail, with prosecutors arguing he poses a significant flight risk.

He faces two counts of first-degree child sexual abuse and one count of second-degree child sexual abuse, with a court appearance scheduled for August 26.

It’s noted that Mahony had joined the World Bank as an economist in January 2023 and previously served as a first secretary at the Australian Embassy in Washington, D.C., following his education at Johns Hopkins University.
