Intelligence community grieves the loss of former FBI and CIA Director William Webster

The intelligence community has expressed deep condolences following the passing of William H. Webster, the only individual to have led both the FBI and CIA, reflecting on his significant contributions to public service.

Webster died on Friday at 101, as confirmed by his family in an announcement.

“The proud and loving family of honorable William H. Webster sadly announces the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and patriot,” the family stated.

Former FBI Director Chris Wray referred to Webster as a “titan” of the community in his first public remarks since leaving his position.

“He was a giant in every sense—both in terms of our nation’s security history and in the hearts of those who value public service built on integrity and principles,” Ray commented.

On social media, the FBI expressed their gratitude, saying they would always be “grateful forever” for Webster’s contributions.

They further noted, “Our deepest sympathies go to his family, friends, and former colleagues. His unwavering commitment to justice has left us a lasting legacy, and we are forever grateful for his service to our nation.”

Before his tenure at the FBI, Webster served in the U.S. Navy and held a position as a federal judge. He was appointed by former President Carter to lead the FBI for nine years, later heading the CIA under Presidents Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

Former President George W. Bush shared his admiration, mentioning that Webster earned the respect of multiple presidents from both political parties. He referred to Webster’s dedication to law and American ideals, highlighting his unique position as the only person to oversee both major intelligence agencies.

Bush expressed his gratitude for Webster’s numerous contributions and extended his sympathies to Linda and the family.

According to reports, during his time at the CIA, Webster handled the intricacies surrounding the Iran controversy with a focus on patience and diplomacy.

“Regardless of the outcome, I believe that professional respect and mutual trust are the most crucial factors,” Webster had said during that turbulent time.

His insights remained relevant decades later as tensions arose within the Trump administration regarding FBI matters, particularly involving figures like Kash Patel and Tulsi Gabbard, whom he criticized for their political affiliations and perceived lack of integrity.

After Trump reassumed office, Wray commented that although there were tensions during that period, Webster’s legacy would persist.

“His legacy lives on—not only within the institutions he led but also in the generations of civil servants he inspired to carry the torch forward,” the former director stated.
