Portnoy Responds to Young Activists’ Political Views
Dave Portnoy, owner of Barstool Sports, found himself missing out on the perspectives of younger voters recently. At a progressive event in Washington, D.C., young activists voiced support for politicians like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and New York City’s mayoral candidate, Zohran Mamdani.
Interestingly, the event featured a mix of speakers, including former Democratic National Committee vice-chairman David Hogg. When Portnoy appeared on Fox News, he was prompted to react to highlights from that event. His comments were, well, quite strong.
“These are college students; they probably never had a job in their lives.”
An attendee named Reihenna Zima even suggested, “I think more politicians should adopt socialism.” Zainab Chowdry, another student, remarked, “Seeing figures like Mamdani and AOC gaining traction in politics is really empowering.”
In response to a clip aired on Fox News’ “Varney & Co.,” Portnoy stated, “It makes me want to vomit… That’s how I feel about it.” He continued expressing his frustration about young people’s lack of real-world experience, saying, “They probably grew up reading about the world but haven’t actually lived it.”
At 48, Portnoy has built Barstool Sports since 2004, often voicing his disdain for socialist policies. During the same segment, he asserted that any form of government that disrupts initiative is unacceptable. “Socialism doesn’t work,” he stated, struggling to understand a nineteen or twenty-year-old lecturing him about life.
Portnoy also noted, “I can’t take advice from someone who has been living for such a short time.”
Activists speaking at the event expressed views that might seem at odds with Portnoy’s. For instance, AOC was championed for her stance on various issues, with some arguing she could lead the Democrats as a democratic socialist. Djema remarked on the importance of separating from neoliberal views that justify capitalism while exploiting workers.
Meanwhile, high school student Ayan Molodina described figures like Mamdani and AOC as inspirational, especially for marginalized groups, suggesting that these leaders have potential to carry significant momentum in future elections.
Portnoy also shared a clip on his social media, illustrating past confrontations with activists who challenged him on capitalism. He recalled a moment in 2016 when he debated a masked ANTIFA member. The young activist had claimed that building wealth by exploiting others was wrong.
In another exchange, Portnoy pointedly asked whether the activist had ever been to Nantucket, Massachusetts, hinting at perceived contradictions in their ideals.
