Australia's Progressive Government Moves Quickly to Acknowledge Palestinian State

Australia’s left-wing labor government announced on Monday that it will recognize the Palestinian state during the upcoming UN General Assembly, dismissing Israel’s argument that such recognition would “reward terrorism.”

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reiterated that Australia will continue to uphold the rights of both Israel and Palestine, while also recognizing the importance of democratic elections.

“The two-state solution represents humanity’s best hope to end the violence in the Middle East and alleviate the suffering in Gaza,” he commented.

Israel, for its part, has long argued that conceding to the Palestinian state would mean “rewarding terrorism.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized the international push for recognition, asserting, “No peace, no war.”

A Hamas official remarked that the growing acknowledgment from Western nations, including Australia, is proof of their increasing influence.

On October 7, 2023, Israel initiated a series of military responses following a deadly assault by Hamas, which resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 individuals and the hostage-taking of 251 others.

Albanese mentioned that he has been in discussions with leaders from the UK, France, New Zealand, and Japan over the past weeks.

“This is a pivotal moment, and Australia aims to collaborate with the global community to seize this opportunity,” he stated to the press.

Israeli Ambassador Amir Maimon described the decision as largely symbolic, arguing it does not lead to “real progress toward peace.” He emphasized that Australia’s move effectively elevates Hamas, a group classified as a terrorist organization, undermining efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace.
