Body Believed to be Missing Teen Found in Florida
Authorities announced Monday that a body thought to be that of missing North Carolina teenager Giovanni Pelletier is too decomposed for official identification. However, there were no indications of violence or foul play observed.
Pelletier’s family received a troubling text from him saying, “Mama, Help,” prompting them to search nearby. He had vanished more than a week ago and was later discovered floating in a pond in Florida.
Previously, authorities had confirmed the body was that of an 18-year-old who was visiting relatives in the Sarasota area after traveling from North Carolina.
Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells reported that an autopsy conducted on Sunday could not provide a definitive identification of the remains.
“The condition of decomposition is advanced, which necessitates additional forensic analysis,” the sheriff explained.
Detectives suspect the body might have been in the pond for a few days before surfacing. Despite the circumstances, Sheriff Wells stated, “no signs of foul play or trauma were detected during the autopsy.” He added that toxicology results are pending to determine the cause and manner of death.
The body was discovered on Friday afternoon by family members searching near a pond close to I-75 and State Route 70, and was tentatively identified as belonging to the missing teen on Saturday.
Pelletier, last seen on August 1st, had gotten into a car with his cousin after arriving to visit family. About 25 minutes later, he sent a text to his mother requesting help and attempted to contact other relatives as well.
According to his cousin, Pelletier began behaving strangely while in the car and even displayed a knife before exiting the vehicle.
Later, a truck driver found Pelletier’s backpack and phone discarded on the side of the road.
The investigation is ongoing.
