Bill Maher Talks Censorship with Drew Barrymore
Comedian Bill Maher recently spoke with actress Drew Barrymore on her podcast, discussing what he sees as the decline of left-wing censorship in light of the 2024 election. He expressed his admiration for Barrymore’s willingness to share her truths, remarking on the courage it took, especially given the current climate. “It’s a bit safer now compared to two years ago,” he noted. “The left really took a hit in 2024, and it’s time to stop dictating what people can think or say.”
Maher seemed a bit frustrated, emphasizing his irritation with the limits being placed on free expression. “It’s gotten to where people want to control everything, telling me who I should look up to—it’s ridiculous,” he added.
Barrymore praised Maher, highlighting his ability to critique individuals across the political spectrum. “It’s refreshing how you call out everyone,” she said, hinting at her uncertainty about how to even label political parties nowadays.
In a more personal turn, Barrymore asked Maher what scares him when it comes to truth. His response reflected a blend of humor and seriousness. “I mean, you can try to stay private, but the snitches and, well, you know… they can always come for you,” he remarked, displaying a touch of vulnerability.
Maher has not shied away from criticizing the left, especially since a recent podcast episode where he tagged calls for social justice as a “silly awakening.” He expressed concerns over movements that he believes might be misguided, making a point about generational changes in understanding social issues.
Earlier this month, Maher defended actress Sidney Sweeney against online backlash, finding it amusing that those labeling her with extreme terms weren’t necessarily practicing inclusivity themselves. “People who say ‘there’s nothing like good genes’ probably need to reconsider their claims,” he joked.
