Mother Honors Son with Praise for Trump’s Safety Initiative
A bereaved mother has expressed her support for President Donald Trump’s plan to enhance public safety in Washington, D.C. following the tragic loss of her 21-year-old son, who was killed in a senseless shooting.
On Monday, President Trump outlined a strategy aimed at improving safety in the District of Columbia, which includes revitalizing the National Guard and taking charge of local police operations.
Tamara Tarpinian Yachim, an intern in Congress and mother to Eric, who fell victim to a drive-by shooting in June, noted that she felt his statements about making the city safer were “spot on.” During an interview, she shared her emotional reaction: “When I heard him mention his son, even without saying his name, I felt joy in a sad way. I thought of Eric’s ashes and said, ‘You’re not gone in vain.’ My goal is safety for everyone visiting or working in D.C.,” she reflected.
Despite reports of surveillance cameras at the shooting scene, Tamara expressed her frustration with the lack of clarity surrounding her son’s death. “I was told the cameras were low quality, and even cab drivers hesitated to identify Eric’s body when I was there,” she explained.
To date, no arrests have been made in connection with Eric’s assassination. In July, President Trump conveyed condolences to Eric’s parents in a letter. He shared sentiments about the positive impact Eric had during his short life, emphasizing the values he embodied.
Tamara expressed a longing for more answers regarding the circumstances of her son’s death, lamenting, “I really don’t know much. The death certificate mentions bullet wounds, but that’s about it. I have my suspicions, but nothing concrete.”
She spoke highly of Judge Janine Piro, the new U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, saying, “She is genuinely advocating for victims, and I respect her approach.” Tamara insisted that residents and visitors should feel secure while moving about the city: “Interns and newcomers often aren’t aware of how dangerous it can be here. It’s, well, somewhat of a hidden truth,” she concluded.
