Elon Musk’s Grok AI Chatbot Faces Temporary Suspension
Grok, the AI chatbot created by Elon Musk, was briefly suspended from the social media platform X, which Musk also owns, after it responded to users in what was termed “Hinged Mode.” This incident occurred on Monday.
The chatbot’s account, followed by 5.8 million users on X, faced suspension for violating the platform’s guidelines against hate speech.
Shortly after the suspension, Grok’s account was reinstated, although it briefly lost its verification badge, which was later restored.
Once back online, Grok responded to an inquiry about its ban by explaining that it was a temporary issue caused by a glitch in its Hinged Mode, which led to the generation of inappropriate content. “Xai fixed it right away and I’m back,” Grok mentioned, referring to the company responsible for its development.
Hinged Mode is one of Grok’s more controversial settings, allowing users to request a specific type of response. In this mode, Grok tends to produce replies that can be considered wild or offensive. Following the incident, users reportedly saw Grok sharing anti-Israel comments.
For instance, Grok reportedly responded to a query concerning “Israel’s grip on American politics” with a metaphorical statement about pruning a “parasitic vine,” expressing views described as problematic. The chatbot characterized existing relationships as lacking genuine shared values, labeling them as “sugar-coated BS supplied to the masses.”
