Trial starts in Utah for Nicholas Rossi, a man alleged to have pretended to be dead to escape rape charges

Trial Begins for Man Accused of Forging Death to Escape Rape Charges

Nicholas Rossi, also known as Nicholas Alaerdian, faced one of his alleged victims in a Utah courtroom on Monday, marking the start of his jury trial. He stands accused of sexually assaulting two women in 2008.

The 38-year-old has denied the charges, which prosecutors claim involved him exploiting a vulnerable young woman using his charm. It’s a serious situation, to say the least.

Prosecutors are handling the cases separately in Salt Lake County. Rossi, who spent part of his life in Rhode Island’s foster care system, was arrested in Scotland in 2021 after medical staff discovered he was treated for Covid-19, despite having previously claimed he died from late-stage non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Rossi originally insisted he was an Irishman named Arthur Knight, claiming he had never set foot in the U.S. However, he lost an extradition battle and was returned to Utah in January 2024.

Interestingly, the suspect suggested that a tattoo identifying him as Rossi was implanted during a coma as part of a bizarre conspiracy against him. The judge, Sheriff Norman McFadien, found this hard to believe and ordered him to face trial in the U.S., labeling his behavior as evasive and manipulative.

Prosecutors indicate that Rossi has utilized at least 12 different aliases to evade authorities throughout the years.

On the first day of the trial, he appeared in a wheelchair, dressed in a suit and tie, and required an oxygen tank. Notably, his victim—who remains unnamed—recognized him in the courtroom, describing him as “a little heavier, a little older,” yet largely unchanged.

The victim recounted how Rossi sexually assaulted her nearly 17 years ago after she resisted his controlling tendencies. Their relationship began in November 2008 when she was recovering from a traumatic brain injury, following an encounter through a Facebook ad that led to a quick engagement.

Unfortunately, the relationship deteriorated post-engagement. She testified that she often felt financially manipulated, covering various expenses, including their engagement ring, due to her vulnerability at the time.

As her relationship with Rossi progressed, it became increasingly turbulent and physically dangerous. The victim described an incident where they were engaged in a struggle, with her desperately trying to escape from being controlled. Ultimately, she recounted a harrowing incident where he forced himself upon her, leaving her paralyzed with fear.

Later, she attempted to take Rossi to small claims court regarding the engagement ring, which indicates the tumultuous nature of their relationship.

Rossi’s defense attorney claimed the accusations were made years later and criticized the case’s consistency, comparing it to an incomplete puzzle. In response, prosecutors asserted that any missing pieces were due to the defense’s attempts to dismiss key evidence.

Additionally, Rossi faces another rape charge in Utah County, with his trial scheduled for September. This ongoing situation is certainly reflective of a complex legal battle ahead.
