Zelenskyy declines talks with Putin while Trump advocates for a summit in Alaska.

During an interview, State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce mentioned that the president is being positioned to facilitate an end to the conflict in Ukraine. “The point is that the murders have to end,” she stated on “media talk,” adding that Donald Trump could effectively manage President Putin.

The situation raises questions, though: Could it be that Putin holds some control over Trump? And why is there an ongoing call for reconciliation when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is hesitant to engage, accusing the Kremlin leader of deception?

Trump touched on this topic in a recent news conference regarding the federal takeover of the DC police department. It’s worth noting that every time he threatens sanctions against Russia, he seems to find a way to backtrack. Remember those 50-day and 10-day deadlines? They seem to fade into memory.

Putin faces diplomatic isolation since invading Ukraine, which has been marred by civilian casualties. The irony of inviting him to Alaska, which the U.S. purchased from Russia in 1867, is not lost on some.

Putin appears to be aiming for battlefield gains to influence future settlements, hence the ongoing bombings in Ukraine. Zelenskyy insists that conceding territory would breach the country’s constitution and stir political unrest back home. Yet, surprisingly, polls indicate that 38% of Ukrainians might be open to giving up land simply to end the conflict.

On the topic of “territorial swapping,” Trump has criticized Zelenskyy’s constitutional concerns. Although Ukraine has managed to reclaim some land, it’s come with significant losses, suggesting a cycle reminiscent of the Crimea takeover in 2014—a situation that sparked outrage but eventually normalized.

Trump, while speaking about negotiating with Putin, claimed he would push for an end to the war. “I’ll get a big call with him, and the missiles will be caught up in Kiev,” he said, emphasizing the intention to work collaboratively with Zelenskyy, despite his disagreements with the Ukrainian leader’s approach.

Part of his strategy seems to suggest urgency; he believes that a decision could be reached early in discussions. Yet, there’s a lingering sense of uncertainty regarding whether face-to-face negotiations are truly fruitful. History shows that despite his bold assertions, past meetings with leaders like Kim Jong-un did not lead to substantial results regarding nuclear programs.

Trump also mentioned a scenario where both leaders might meet privately, but it remains debatable whether Zelenskyy would even consider accepting terms that appear to reward Russian aggression. Among Zelenskyy’s priorities are security guarantees, as any ceasefire could just give Putin’s forces time to regroup for another offensive.

Amidst the complexity and brutality of this conflict, the overarching issue is clear: an illegal invasion led by dictatorial ambitions threatens Ukraine’s existence.
