AP Avoids the Clear Truth While Using Race in Trump’s DC Crime Action

Trends in Crime Reporting and Federal Oversight in DC

It seems inevitable that discussions around race would emerge in any analysis of President Donald Trump’s recent actions regarding crime in Washington, DC. A piece by the Associated Press titled “Trump’s Washington police reflects the history of racist stories about urban crime” highlights how Trump’s administration has tangled rhetoric and law enforcement in complex racial connotations. On Monday, Trump indicated that the federal government would take charge of both the National Guard and the DC Metropolitan Police Department to combat rising crime rates.

The report suggests that this move reflects a troubling history where politicians have used language that reinforces racist stereotypes about predominantly Black urban areas, which can shape public sentiment and validate overzealous policing. Activists featured in the article regard Trump’s crackdown as a potential civil rights crisis. For instance, NAACP President Derrick Johnson described this federal intervention as a “federal coup,” possibly intended to divert attention from other pressing issues.

However, there are a few critical points the AP overlooked. It’s important to note that a significant portion of violent crimes in DC is perpetrated by Black individuals. Moreover, most victims of serious crimes are also Black residents. It raises questions about whether the intended benefits of such federal measures might actually assist law-abiding Black citizens the most.

A report from the National Institute of Criminal Justice Reform examining murders in Washington, DC, from 2021 to 2022 reveals that both victims and suspects are predominantly young Black men, aged 18 to 34. The findings indicate that approximately 95% of murder suspects and 94% of those in non-fatal shootings are Black, even though their demographic represents less than half of the district’s total population.

Another analysis from the Center for Gun Violence Solutions reported that 97% of gun-related homicides in 2023 involved Black individuals. Yet, did the AP mention any of these statistics, or highlight Black residents who might actually welcome federal involvement for enhanced safety? It doesn’t seem so. Instead, their narrative appears to obfuscate these uncomfortable realities while focusing on interpretations that fit a particular agenda.
