Mayor Eric Adams marks $33 million initiative to enhance mental health services for New Yorkers in city clubhouses

Expansion of Mental Health Services in NYC

Mayor Eric Adams has wrapped up a $30 million initiative aimed at enhancing services for mentally ill residents of New York City. As of Tuesday, there are 13 large “clubhouses” operating across five districts.

The mayor’s office stated that Adams spearheaded a joint state- and city-funded project in 2023, establishing a large center that serves over 300 individuals each.

“When you’re not part of the community, it impacts your physical health,” Adams emphasized during a press event at a Bronx clubhouse known as Venture House. “It’s crucial to have spaces like these clubhouses.”

Before this initiative, six clubhouses were already in operation, using the new funding to expand their services, while the remaining seven are newly launched. The latest addition, Phoenix House, opened its doors in Manhattan in July.

This expansion is expected to nearly double the clubhouse membership in the city, aiming for 6,600 members by 2027, according to officials.

Run by a nonprofit, the center offers health, social, and employment resources to members experiencing various levels of psychological distress.

Members are actively involved in the clubhouse, taking on responsibilities like giving tours, serving meals, cleaning, and assisting at the reception area.

As of now, there are four clubhouses in Manhattan, three each in Brooklyn and the Bronx, two in Queens, and one in Staten Island.

Health Commissioner Michelle Morse noted that the city’s health department will be collecting and analyzing more data related to its members.

“One of our aims is to enhance the data collection and showcase positive outcomes,” Morse stated.

The initiative is celebrated as part of Adams’ campaign to “End the Culture of Anything Goes.” According to reports, members of the Venture House expressed their enthusiasm, with Adams emotionally declaring, “I’m here at home.”

The Adams Administration has significantly increased its funding of mental health clubhouses, focusing on larger facilities, while removing nine smaller clubhouses that no longer met the Ministry of Health’s new capacity criteria.

Nonetheless, six smaller establishments managed to secure their operations as the city council allocated $5 million in funding over the past two annual budgets.

“We’ve collaborated with the city council, which has been supportive of additional clubhouses,” Morse remarked. “I genuinely appreciate the number of clubhouses available in the city.”
