Gingrich’s Predictions on Trump-Putin Meeting
Newt Gingrich, the former Speaker of the House, shared his thoughts on Fox News’ “Hannity” regarding President Donald Trump’s upcoming meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He suggested that Trump might choose to leave the discussions if he senses that Putin is attempting to bluff him.
Trump announced on Truth Social that he would be meeting with Putin on August 15, following his continuous efforts to mediate peace between Ukraine and Russia. During the segment, host Sean Hannity asked Gingrich about the potential outcomes of their interaction.
According to Gingrich, the recent Russian attacks were a troubling sign. “Putin will probably go into the meeting attempting to misinterpret Trump completely and may try to bluff him,” he commented. “My guess is that he may just get up and walk out.” He elaborated that Trump could express disbelief in Putin’s statements, indicating a lack of trust.
Gingrich also remarked on Trump’s optimism, saying, “I have a strong belief in Donald Trump,” even if he thinks Putin may be misreading the situation.
Trump mentioned that the meeting would take place in Alaska, hinting at the significance of the location.
Despite Trump’s attempts for dialogue, the conversation with Putin in May yielded no agreement on the conflict in Ukraine. Reports suggest that the war has led to a staggering number of casualties and, last month, Trump revealed plans to bolster support for Ukraine.
In his efforts, Trump has provided offensive weapons to Ukraine while threatening Russia with “severe” sanctions. He also indicated he would create secondary tariffs affecting major Russian industries and try to expedite the resolution of the conflict.
“I think Trump will approach Putin and inform him that continuing with aggression will have severe consequences. If Putin responds flippantly, he might simply walk away,” Gingrich remarked.
Gingrich recounted a past negotiation with Japan where Trump displayed patience despite multiple walkouts by the other side, suggesting that this approach could bring the discussions closer to a resolution.
On another note, US special envoy Steve Witkov recently engaged with Putin in a final attempt for peace negotiations. A report indicated that Putin might be open to halting the war if the Russian-speaking Donbas region is abandoned.
The peace talks have previously shown success, resulting in agreements between Azerbaijan and Armenia and other ceasefires around the world, indicating that diplomatic efforts can yield positive outcomes.
