Angels’ Triple Play Highlights Game Against Dodgers

The Los Angeles Angels pulled off a remarkable triple play in a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night, featuring star Shohei Ohtani.

The score was even at five when Ohtani hit a ball right back at Angels pitcher Brock Burke in the sixth inning.

Shortstop Zack Neto was quick to react, catching the ball and stepping on second base for the first out. He then turned to first base, noticing confusion among the runners, and tossed the ball to first baseman Nolan Chanuel, who tagged out Dalton Rush. Neto ended up with two putouts and an assist on the play.

“I caught the ball and stepped on second. When I looked for the first one, I saw the runner still confused, so I threw it, hoping Nolan would make the play,” Neto explained. “I joked with Nolan that if he messed it up, since it was my first triple play, I’d have some words for him.”

This marked the eighth triple play in the Angels’ history but only the second since 1997. The last one occurred in August 2023 against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Neto mentioned on social media that he had only seen such plays online before the game. “I usually just watch them on YouTube and TikTok,” he said.

Later in the game, Ohtani pushed back with a strong performance, but the Angels rallied in the bottom of the ninth. Chanuel delivered a sacrifice fly that helped tie the game, and Joe Adele hit a high chopper in the tenth to secure a 7-6 victory for the Angels.

This win improved the Angels’ record to 58-62 for the season, while the Dodgers fell to 68-52, still leading the National League West.
