Vice President JD Vance to Visit UK Troops and Discuss Ukraine Conflict

Vice President JD Vance is set to engage with US troops at a British military site on Wednesday. This trip to the UK carries significant weight, as Vance will be meeting with British leaders to talk about the ongoing war in Ukraine, particularly ahead of President Donald Trump’s upcoming discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The purpose of Vance’s UK visit seems to be aimed at strengthening ties with European allies before Trump’s anticipated dialogue with Putin in Anchorage, Alaska. It appears there’s some pressure—maybe more than usual—for these allies to take more responsibility, given that the conflict is, after all, quite literally in their backyard.

On Wednesday, Vance plans to visit Fairford, a Royal Air Force Base, which hosts the US Air Force’s 501st Combat Support Building and the 99th Expeditionary Reconnaissance Squadron. According to sources familiar with his planned remarks, Vance, a former Marine, is expected to acknowledge and thank the troops for their service.

Military bases, like Fairford, are crucial for US Air Force operations and play a significant role as forward operating bases for European military assets. US Air Force bombers are regularly deployed there, as part of strategic efforts to work with NATO allies and ensure readiness. This collaboration has been especially important since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, when US bombers conducted joint operations with Germany and Romania.

The UK hosts roughly 10,000 US troops, as reported by the Foreign Policy Think Tank Diplomacy Council. Prior to his engagement with the US military, Vance is expected to join a call with European leaders to discuss the Russia-Ukraine situation, following several previous conversations focused on the war during his UK visit. He’s also set to meet British leaders, including Foreign Secretary David Lammy, to cover various topics, I suppose.

On the agenda will be discussions about the Middle East and negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, providing an opportunity to involve representatives from Ukraine and other European allies. Some US officials have suggested that these talks have led to notable progress in addressing the Ukraine conflict, though specific details remain sparse.

It’s still unclear whether Vance will accompany Trump to Alaska for his talks with Putin. However, during an interview, Vance mentioned that the US is trying to raise funds to support Ukraine and emphasized that European nations need to shoulder more responsibility in ending the conflict. He pointed out, perhaps quite effectively, that this crisis is essentially unfolding close to their own territory.

Since February 2022, Congress has passed various measures, totaling at least $175 billion, to aid Ukraine, as noted by the Council on Foreign Relations.

Trump and Putin Meeting on the Horizon

Meanwhile, Trump has indicated that his upcoming meeting with Putin will be the first in-person encounter since the war began. During a press briefing, he mentioned that he can usually gauge Putin’s interest in negotiations pretty quickly, but acknowledged that real agreement hinges on some potentially difficult land transactions.

Trump expressed willingness to share any resulting deal with NATO and European Union leaders as well as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but he did suggest that maintaining some skepticism might be wise.

It seems there’s a shift in dynamics between Trump and Putin too, with tensions rising due to stalled peace discussions. Their relationship, which appeared somewhat stable during Trump’s earlier administration, seems to be deteriorating lately, causing Trump some frustration with Putin’s tactics.

“A lot of bulls— has been thrown at us by Putin,” Trump stated recently, reflecting perhaps a growing impatience with the ongoing situation.
