Bill Barr backs Trump's plan for D.C. police management: 'Spot on'

Trump’s Federal Law Enforcement Plan Backed by Barr

Attorney General Bill Barr expressed his approval of President Donald Trump’s initiative to augment federal law enforcement in Washington, D.C. during a recent appearance on Fox News.

He stated, “The president has a right to take action. Judge Jeanine outlined the situation really well, and I think she’s got the right perspective for addressing these issues in the capital.” Barr emphasized the high crime rates in D.C., arguing that if it were a standalone nation, its murder rate would lead the country. “This area represents the American people. It’s vital that we maintain its safety,” he added.

As previously noted, President Trump ordered federal officials to increase their presence in D.C. for a week, aiming to tackle violent crime. The operation was spearheaded by the U.S. Parks Police and included other federal agencies such as the FBI, DEA, and ICE.

The directive comes on the heels of a March executive order aimed at establishing a task force to enhance federal oversight in immigration law enforcement and ensure sanctuary cities comply with federal statutes. This reflects a broader federal strategy regarding law enforcement in the area.

On Monday, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser criticized the president’s move, describing it as “unstable and unprecedented.” She also noted that while the situation is concerning, it wasn’t entirely surprising given past rhetoric.

Interestingly, the D.C. Police Union has shown support for Trump’s order. Chair Greg Pemberton remarked, “We stand with the president. Washington, D.C. is seeing crime escalate, and our officers are overwhelmed.” This acknowledgment from the union underscores a growing concern about the current trajectory of crime in the nation’s capital.
