2025 F1 Season Summer Shutdown Recap
The 2025 Formula 1 season has hit its summer break. It’s a perfect moment to pause and assess who’s winning and losing so far. Let’s explore some winners from the first half of the season, including teams, drivers, and even a few toy companies that made a splash during the initial 14 races.
Last year was a dream for McLaren, as they clinched their first constructors’ title since 1998. This year, they entered as favorites once again, and so far, they haven’t disappointed. Lando Norris, with a victory on home turf, and Oscar Piastri have propelled the team right to the top. The season opener in Melbourne was quite a highlight, and now, after a string of performances, they’ve maintained their edge—Norris’ win gave them a slight tiebreaker advantage over Mercedes.
Since that point, things have only gotten better for McLaren. They’ve achieved an impressive 11 Grand Prix wins between Piastri and Norris, including several podium finishes and consecutive 1-2 finishes. In total, they’ve locked out front-row starting positions seven times—it’s a remarkable feat, reminiscent of their 1988 dominance.
As the first 14 races wrapped up, Ferrari sat second with 299 points, quite a ways off McLaren. Red Bull, meanwhile, had a significant point lead over Mercedes, echoing their dominance from 2023. It looks like the battle for the drivers’ championship is shaping up to be a two-horse race between Piastri and Norris, both showcasing outstanding form. Piastri, particularly, has emerged as a strong title contender, leading by nine points at this mid-season point.
So, where do we go from here? It’s a long road to the championship, but if Piastri’s performance in the first half is any indication, a championship trophy might not be out of reach for him.
Norris, while facing some ups and downs—including a recent collision with Piastri—has managed to stay close. He clinched victories in Monaco and his home race at Silverstone, making this season pretty exciting for the fans. Can he catch up to Piastri? We’ll have to wait and see as the season progresses.
Now, shifting gears a bit, the lead-up to the Miami Grand Prix provided some fun moments, particularly during the driver’s parade, which had the drivers climbing into a life-sized LEGO F1 car. For many, including veterans like Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, it felt like a trip back to childhood—an enjoyable sight for everyone involved.
Reflecting on some significant victories from the first half, we can see that the narrative has shifted for several teams. Sauber, for instance, kicked off their season feeling the pressure, especially after a poor start marked by a notably disastrous pit stop. However, a new driver lineup has seemingly rejuvenated the team. Hülkenberg’s podium finish at the British Grand Prix has provided a massive boost, and with promising performances from rookie Gabriel Boltreto, Sauber is making strides and moving away from the struggles of previous years.
Meanwhile, Williams has experienced a more challenging season. After a decent finish in 2023, they found themselves in a tough spot, with driver changes and a disappointing ninth-place ranking coming into play. While Alexander Albon has been performing admirably, there’s a sense that the team needs a significant turnaround to regain its competitive edge.
The outlook for the constructors’ championship remains fluid. If Williams can retain their current positioning, it would signify a step in the right direction. Albon seems determined to be part of that growth, as he expresses his commitment to seeing the team thrive.
We’re not out of the woods yet. As the summer break concludes, anticipation for the second half of the season will surely build, and we’ll see if the current leaders can maintain their momentum.
