Almost 100,000 taxpayers file electronic returns in the first 10 days of the system launch

The daily submission rate for tax returns this year has seen an increase almost fivefold compared to last year.

Within just the first ten days of introducing the e-return system for the 2025-2026 tax year, almost every taxpayer seemed to have filed their income tax returns online, as stated by the National Revenue Commission (NBR) on August 14.

As of yesterday (August 13), a total of 96,945 taxpayers had submitted their returns online since the system was officially launched by Financial Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed on August 4, 2025. By contrast, only 20,523 taxpayers had filed e-Returns during the same period last year, which began on September 9, 2024. The increase in the average daily submission rate this year is noted to be nearly five times higher than that of the previous year.

On August 3, 2025, the NBR implemented an order mandating online filing of income tax returns for all citizens, with exceptions for seniors over 65, individuals with disabilities, Bangladeshis living abroad, and legal representatives of retirees.

This order was revised on August 11, 2025, to exempt foreigners working in Bangladesh from the electronic filing requirement. Taxpayers facing registration issues may still opt for paper returns until October 31, 2025, provided they apply to the Deputy Commissioner with a valid reason, pending approval from the Joint Tax Commissioner.

According to the NBR, taxpayers can now pay taxes from home using bank transfers, debit and credit cards, and mobile financial services like BKASH, Rocket, and Nagad. After filing online, users can immediately print their e-return acknowledgement slip and income tax certification.

To assist taxpayers, the NBR has set up a call center at 09643-717171 to provide instant support for queries related to electronic returns. Additionally, concerns can be submitted via written communication or through the electronic tax service options available on the NBR Portal.

The NBR encourages all eligible taxpayers to submit their returns punctually, ensuring accurate disclosures of income, expenses, assets, and liabilities in their role as responsible citizens.
