Operation Targets Human Trafficking in Los Angeles

For a long time, the Figueora Street Corridor in downtown Los Angeles has had quite the reputation as a hotspot for sex work and human trafficking.

In a recent initiative to tackle the severe gang issues tied to sex trafficking in the area, federal authorities along with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) launched a significant operation. This operation aimed at apprehending several suspects believed to be involved in exploiting a young woman and, shockingly, even a child as young as 14.

This bust was part of a coordinated effort between the Department of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security, and the LAPD, focusing particularly on the Hoover Street gang. Reports indicate that gang members have shamelessly used social media to showcase lavish lifestyles—complete with cash and luxury items—to lure in vulnerable girls with enticing promises.

However, the reality was utterly different. According to a 150-page criminal complaint, these women faced horrendous treatment, enduring beatings, sexual assault, and being forced into sex work.

During this early morning operation aptly named Operation Broken Blade, authorities managed to detain 10 out of the 11 targeted suspects. One individual, Brian Isler, reportedly managed to evade capture and is now wanted by the DOJ.

Federal agents identified Amaya Armstead, often referred to as “Lady Duck,” as a key figure in these trafficking activities. Disturbingly, her nickname has even been tattooed on the skin of several victims.

In one shocking detail, the charges allege that Armstead was caught on video violently assaulting a woman in a convenience store, which offers a glimpse into the brutality at play.

Furthermore, during the operation, authorities surrounded a suspect at a downtown motel, believed to be a location where gang members facilitated the sale of women and minors.

Police reported successfully rescuing four victims, including minors, amidst this crackdown.

The charges brought against the suspects encompass a wide array of serious offenses, including sex trafficking of minors and various gun and drug-related charges. If found guilty, they could face significant prison time.
