Newsom seeks backing for California redistricting: ‘Time to act, America’

Newsom rallies support for California redistricting: 'Wake up, America'

California Governor Proposes New Election Map Amid Trump Concerns

On Thursday, California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) expressed his backing for a proposal to rezone based on plans emerging from Texas. He urged the nation to “wake up” to what he views as President Trump’s bid to reclaim power.

“Wake Up, America,” Newsom declared during a rally where they announced plans for a special election aimed at allowing California to design a map for the new Congress—provided another state takes the initiative first. “This is a serious moment. You need to realize what’s happening. It’s about fear and anxiety,” he added.

Last week, Newsom revealed California’s intent to proceed with special elections under existing voting laws. He clarified that while this measure wouldn’t eliminate the independent committees responsible for drawing district lines, it would ensure the state keeps pace with Republican gerrymandering efforts.

This development has set two conditions for Texas House Democrats, who are likely to spend the next week and a half in various states to secure a quorum and push forward a new district map that would enable Republicans to gain five additional seats in the upcoming midterm elections. In response, California Democrats stated that they would return if California could present a new map that effectively neutralizes Texas’ proposed changes.

Newsom is advocating for redrawing California’s maps to counterbalance the Republican maneuvers seen in Texas.

Dubbed “Freedom Day,” Thursday’s rally referenced Trump’s earlier declaration when he announced extensive tariffs. Newsom echoed a note from Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif), who characterized Trump’s actions as akin to “punching a bear,” suggesting a vigorous rebuttal is necessary.

He emphasized that Democrats need to grasp that Trump isn’t adhering to any conventional rules and that California’s move is a direct reaction to his approach, particularly concerning Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R). While he maintains that an independent committee is the best method for implementing these processes, he expressed concern over the opacity surrounding Texas, where lawmakers are attempting to push their map forward without adequate public consent.

“We have maps based on votes, empowering people,” he pointed out. “This would mark the first constituency ever held, which distinguishes us.”

“I hope this reality sinks in: America, wake up to what Donald Trump is doing,” Newsom urged. “I see his attacks on institutions, knowledge, and history. I’m aware of the conflict with the American people over science and public health.”

Later, he mentioned to reporters his hopes for swift legislative action on voting initiatives, with a map proposal expected in the coming days.

In a statement, Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin claimed that Newsom’s actions send a “booming message” that California Democrats will stand against the Republican Party. He believes the measures could demonstrate to Trump and the GOP that they can’t just “rig” elections in their favor for the midterms.

“It levels the playing field and allows voters to choose who will control the House, not Donald Trump,” Martin explained. “Confronting voters with the records is fundamental to our democracy, while Republicans seem fixated on evading accountability.”

He indicated that the responsibility would deter Trump and Republicans from attempting to alter the rules, affirming that Democrats would continue to advocate for free and fair elections, with the DNC pledging support at every stage.

The California Republican Congressional Delegation issued a statement denouncing Newsom’s plan, affirming their dedication to maintaining bipartisan support for the state’s independent constituency committee. They accused Newsom of trying to usurp power from the people, shifting it to politicians in Sacramento to facilitate gerrymandering.

“Our delegation stands with California citizens and upholds their rights as outlined in the state constitution by opposing Newsom’s voting measures,” they asserted.
