White House evaluates Smithsonian museums in preparation for the nation's 250th anniversary

Trump Advocates for Fair Representation at Smithsonian Museums

President Donald Trump expressed that the Smithsonian museums should present a balanced view of American history, acknowledging both the positive and negative aspects. His comments came as the White House sent a letter to the Smithsonian on Tuesday, requesting a review of the museum’s exhibitions in preparation for the nation’s 250th birthday in 2026.

“We want the museum to treat our country fairly,” Trump stated during a press briefing, emphasizing the need for honest discourse about American history, regardless of whether it’s framed in a politically correct or unfavorable light.

He continued, “Our museums have an obligation to express what has happened in our country over the years. There are good and bad things, but they should be presented accurately.” The Smithsonian acknowledged receipt of the letter and stated it would collaborate with the White House, Congress, and its governing committee to proceed with the review.

In a statement, the Smithsonian emphasized its commitment to academic rigor and presenting historical facts accurately. However, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller was more critical, arguing that left-wing activists were tarnishing the museum’s integrity.

“The Smithsonian is a global symbol of America’s strength and culture,” Miller remarked on a social platform. “It should be a place where families celebrate American history, not a platform for activists to rewrite our story.” He further mentioned that the Trump administration would strive to restore a sense of American pride within the institution.

The letter dispatched by the White House outlines plans to evaluate social media presence, exhibit narratives, and educational content to ensure alignment with American ideals. This initiative aims to highlight American exceptionalism while discouraging divisive or partisan viewpoints.

The review will include notable institutions like the American History Museum and the National Museum of African American History, among others. This initiative seems to echo past actions taken by the Trump administration, including an executive order aimed at ensuring that Smithsonian programs align with federal values and do not promote divisive ideologies.

Additionally, artist Amy Sherald has canceled an upcoming exhibit scheduled for September, featuring a portrait an activist group described as potentially divisive.
