Florida Governor Announces Second Immigration Facility

During a press conference on Thursday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis noted that since the opening of the first immigration facility, called Alligator Alcatraz, there has been an increase in voluntary departures among illegal immigrants. He shared details about a new facility that has been established in North Florida, specifically within the unused sections of the Baker Correctional Facility.

DeSantis mentioned that the demand for this second facility is evident, stating, “I want to make sure there’s demand there… they’re increasing flights, and their cadence is getting better.” He expressed confidence that this decision would effectively utilize available resources in the state’s approach to immigration.

He went on to say, “There is demand, and our peers are ready and willing to assist our federal partners on this important mission.” Additionally, he highlighted that the rate of voluntary departures has risen since Crocodile Alcatraz was launched.

“Since the launch of Wannial Catraz, we’ve noted a rise in the number of illegal aliens choosing voluntary departures, which helps us secure plane tickets,” DeSantis explained. He speculated that the increased departures may be due to individuals realizing the legal implications and wanting to act preemptively.

Moreover, the initiative aligns with the Department of Homeland Security’s strategy, which encourages illegal immigrants to opt for voluntary departures in exchange for a flight ticket to their homeland and a $1,000 incentive upon arrival. Officials argue that this approach is more economical for U.S. taxpayers.
