New Orleans Mayor Faces Historic Federal Indictment

In a groundbreaking move, the Democratic mayor of New Orleans, LaToya Cantrell, has become the first mayor in office to be indicted on federal charges.

The indictment claims that Cantrell engaged in a romantic relationship with Jeffrey Paul Bappy, who works in her executive protection team, and then misused her position to cover it up.

“Today’s announcement serves as a reminder of the importance of ensuring that the judicial system operates fairly and efficiently, free from political influence,” commented New Orleans Councilman Oliver Thomas.

Both Cantrell and Bappy are facing several charges, which include making false statements, wire fraud, obstruction of justice, and providing misleading information to the grand jury. Prosecutors allege that Bappy was supposed to be on duty, protecting Cantrell, but was instead involved in personal matters, misleading the city.

Previously, when questioned about her spending habits in 2022, Cantrell responded by citing issues of racism. “My travel accommodations stem from safety concerns, not luxury,” she stated, emphasizing the unique challenges faced by Black women regarding their safety.

In a notable instance, she reportedly spent $40,000 on a lavish trip to France, which included a luxury hotel room overlooking the Eiffel Tower at over $700 per night.

Evidence suggests that Cantrell and Bappy undertook several measures to obstruct the investigation, such as using encrypted messaging, making false statements to authorities, and removing digital traces of their communication.

Cantrell, who has made history as New Orleans’ first female mayor, is nearing the end of her term, which concludes in January. Unfortunately, her husband passed away earlier this year, two years after her relationship with Bappy began.
